Masonry — Restoration

Masonry restoration in Hamilton

Careful, like-for-like work for older masonry where the original character is worth keeping.

What this involves

Restoration is not the same as repair. It is slower, more conservative and more concerned with what the building was made of in the first place. Older brick and stone often needs a softer mortar than modern cement mixes, and the wrong choice can accelerate damage rather than stop it.

We approach restoration by working out what is original, what has been altered and what has failed. Where possible we keep and repair existing material. Where replacement is needed we source units that match, and we mix mortar to suit the masonry rather than the other way around.

Scope of work

  • 01

    Sympathetic repointing

Mortar matched to the age and softness of the masonry, with joint profiles that follow the original.

  • 02

    Unit replacement

Salvaged or closely matched brick and stone where originals have failed.

  • 03

    Porch and detail rebuilds

Columns, parapets, sills, and decorative courses rebuilt true to form.

  • 04

    Condition reporting

A written summary of what we found and what we recommend, in plain language.

When to call us

If your home is older, has masonry that has been repaired with hard cement in the past, or you want work done to keep rather than replace its character, this is the right conversation to have before any work begins.

How we approach it

  1. 01Survey the building and record what is original and what has changed.
  2. 02Agree materials and mortar before any raking out begins.
  3. 03Carry out the work in stages, protecting what is being kept.

Masonry restoration: common questions

Can any mortar be used for old brick?

No. Mortar that is harder than the brick can cause the brick to fail. We match mortar strength and make-up to the masonry.

Do you work on heritage-designated buildings?

Tell us if your property has a designation or is in a heritage district. It may affect what approvals and materials are required, and we will factor that into the discussion.
